Teaching Matters is a non-profit organization and leading provider of professional development to improve teacher effectiveness. We believe that innovating and improving the quality of urban public school education is the moral imperative of our generation. Today's urban schools face daunting demands that require collaborative effort and widely distributed leadership to make and sustain measurable improvement throughout the school. We offer comprehensive services to enhance school performance, instruction, and student learning. In collaboration with front line educators and nationally recognized experts, Teaching Matters pursues a new standard for student success. This standard strikes a balance between core academic and 21st Century skills, preparing students for college and career-readiness. Since our founding in 1994, we have collaborated with educators at all levels, reaching over 700 K-12 public and non-public schools as well as educators across six states.

Our team of Educational Coaches assess each school's current environment, identify opportunities, launch new systems/enhance existing ones and support teachers and administrators as needed. Coaches will collaborate closely with school leaders, teachers and colleagues to develop and implement strategies that make initiatives successful in the schools. Additionally, coaches will have the opportunity to work on internal organizational systems, events and staff development.

Data Specialist

Teaching Matters is seeking a data specialist with extensive experience in the education sector to help implement a ground-breaking teacher effectiveness support model for urban schools. The successful candidate will have an unparalleled opportunity to influence the development of a program reaching 2500 teachers and 27,000 students by the end of 2017 in the NYC metropolitan area.

The primary role of the data specialist will be to design, track, and capture student and school-based data to support our goal of achieving measurable student outcomes.  Work will be partly school-based and will likely require intensive interaction with school leaders, teacher leaders, and teachers.

Responsibilities include

  • Assist in development of metrics for tracking student outcomes at a school and teacher team level
  • Oversee agreements and collection of data from participating schools
  • Support math and literacy coaches in analyzing trend data
  • Conduct initial data assessments of schools and provide upfront analysis
  • Develop templates and models for looking at data within teams
  • Oversee and analyze data for TMI program model across schools
  • Develop reports and communications on program impact
  • Works closely with technology department to coordinate data collection and automation

Key Qualifications

  • 5-7 years experience designing and working intensively with school and student-based data
  • Experience helping principals and teachers organize and analyze student data
  • Experience with data analysis in urban schools preferred

Educational Coaches - Literacy and Math

Teaching Matters is seeking  exceptional educational coaches to implement a ground-breaking teacher effectiveness support model for urban schools. This career opportunity offers the right candidates the chance to have a major impact on urban K-12 teachers and students.

The primary role of the educational coach will be to support schools in establishing student outcome-focused professional learning communities (PLCs) in math or literacy.  The coach’s objective will be to empower teachers to achieve measurable student outcomes through a process of collaboration to set and accomplish common instructional goals.  Work will primarily be school-based and require intensive interaction with school leaders, teacher leaders, and teachers.

Responsibilities include

Leading teacher teams

  • Execute a clear roadmap for leading teachers to achieve student outcomes
  • Support teachers in using data effectively to drive instruction
  • Facilitate idea sharing and collaboration in a group setting
  • Mentor and develop teachers to address individual needs, offer strategies, and determine next steps

Developing and empowering teacher leaders

  • Prepare team leaders who ultimately lead continuous improvement throughout a school
  • Lead institutes focusing on specific areas of collective capacity building for cross-school teams

Guiding and collaborating with school leaders

  • Organize teacher teams for success with collaboration from school leaders
  • Determine most effective organizational structure for teams to achieve outcomes
  • Sustain and expand continuous improvement efforts for school-wide success
  • Align teacher evaluation systems to teachers’ goal setting

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4 years experience as a coach/school leader AND minimum of 4 years (grades K-12) of  teaching or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in achieving ambitious, measurable student results in reading, writing, and / or math
  • Experience facilitating teacher teams / groups to achieve student outcomes
  • Experience delivering professional development institutes to groups of teachers and/or coaches
  • Demonstrated capacity in being a catalyst for change, well organized, and collaborative problem-solver
  • Demonstrated knowledge of classroom management strategies
  • Experience in urban schools
  • Technology skills with current computer software, including word processing and online collaboration tools

Assistant to the Director

Teaching Matters is seeking a Development Assistant/Assistant to the Executive Director who will be responsible for all administrative aspects of the Executive Office and Development Department. He/she will support the Development Department and the Executive Director in all fundraising and other external Executive Office efforts.

Executive Office Responsibilities include

  • Manage and maintain the ED's schedule and assist with scheduling internal and external meetings.
  • Assist with phone and email communications, providing timely feedback to inquiries from Board members, Consultants, Donors, Department of Education representatives, and other key constituents.
  • Read and analyze incoming emails and prepare responses to correspondence containing routine inquiries prioritize for ED.
  • Oversee the calendaring and scheduling of Board and Sub-Committee meetings and handle all associated administrative details (i.e. prepare and distribute board meeting materials, agendas, minutes, etc.).
  • Research and compile background materials on Board prospects and other key contacts as assigned.
  • Manage travel arrangements and expense reimbursement, etc.

Development Office Responsibilities include

  • Process donations and prepare acknowledgement letters and other correspondence.
  • Maintain foundation, corporation and individual donor files and support the submission of funding requests and reports.
  • Create monthly fundraising reports and other database reports as needed.
  • Continually update and correct database records.
  • Conduct preliminary research on prospective corporate foundation and individual donors.
  • Coordinate productions and mailing of spring and year-end appeal letters.
  • Maintain guest lists, gather and prepare registration materials and other duties as assigned for fund-raising events.
  • Prepare materials for distribution, events and meetings as needed. (i.e. copying, filing, mailing, e-mailing)
  • Organize and maintain development records, office files and other materials.
  • Coordinate with Finance Office Manager on the processing of donations and reconciling donations (including but not limited to monthly development revenue reports, pledge status reports and annual audit preparation).
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Development.

Other Duties

  • Provide occasional assistance outside the normal schedule to accommodate and support the office.
  • Assist the Deputy Director and Director of Curriculum as needed.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • A minimum of two years' experience in an administrative position, preferably in a not-for-profit development office.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and fund raising Database.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to present information concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
